This magazine has matured nicely from the first issue as British special interest magazine to fill a void for the Global Mercedes Benz enthusiast. Custom and low rider Benz, German tuners, special bodies, time capsule cars, homologation specials, running reports, Unimog, Maybach and Smart are all to be found in Mercedes Enthusiast.
If you are looking for unbiased new vehicle assessments read the title again as Mercedes Benz rules as far as the editorial team are concerned.
For the enthusiast, collector (2006-02-23)
I lived in the UK for two years, where I drove a 2001 CLK CDI (a model not available in the US) and subscribed to a number of auto magazines covering various marques (Porsche, BMW World, Mercedes World) and purchased others (Evo, What Auto, Land Rover International, Land Rover Monthly, Mercedes Enthusiast, etc.) at the newstand.
At first, it was remarkable to me that, seeing so many Mercedes on the road, the quality of the Mercedes magazines was less than that covering Porsche and BMW. I eventually came to learn that MB has a large commercial (taxis, buses) and industrial contingent (buses, trucks) -- these owners buy for commercial value and don't need or read a monthly magazine on what's new, neat, or exciting. On the other hand, individual MB owners are as loyal as the Porsche, BMW, LR owners, but generally aren't the "car enthusiast" types -- they didn't trick out their cars, find interest in "track days", spend time debating tires and brakes. They valued reliability, luxury, performance ... and collectibility, perhaps more than the others.
Mercedes Enthusiast addresses this kind of audience: articles on changes to current models (in the EU), reviews of new models, and standard models modified by well-known "aftermarket" enterprises (e.g., AMG). Articles on MB history, personalities, racing. Mostly EU focused, as would be expected; there are occasional US focused articles, but many times, one finds the model is not available here, sad to say. The information on new and used prices applies to the UK, where the magazine is published; for this kind of data, a US web-based site will be more useful. There are occasional articles on owner modification -- and the ads from after market parts dealers & distributors are most useful, now that the web has made international shopping so easy -- but given that MB generally discourages owners tinkering with their cars, there is very little of this genre of article compared to the BMW magazines.
So, would I recommend Mercedes Enthusiast? Definitely, yes, even given the price for US subscriptions. Why -- because there are no US focused magazines devoted to the MB marque and the information isn't readily available in any other source.
I hope that Mercedes Enthusiast will find enough US subscribers to be able to print here and bring the subscription cost down ... or offer an on-line PDF-based subscription at a far lower cost (sorry, Amazon, that may not please you!), but until it does, $8 per copy is steep, but the magazine is worth it.

Reviews every Mercedes model, including Classic models. It is published in the UK, therefore, covers European models particularly right hand drive models, not US models. Once in a while, a featured article is on a US model. A little expensive, but then again, people pay $4.50 for Starbucks coffee these days.
